Today, I’m thrilled to introduce you to my good friend Dr. Adrienne Keene. I’d like to shift our focus in the feed to think about Indigenous folks in Higher Education. In her own words: Osiyo Friends, I'm Adrienne Keene and I'm a Citizen of the Cherokee Nation, originally from Kumeyaay homelands in southern california, and now residing on Wampanoag and Narragansett homelands in what is currently known as Providence, Rhode Island. I'm a writer, scholar, podcaster, and blogger, and focus my work in the worlds of Native representations and Indigenous education. Ten years ago I found myself extremely lonely and frustrated as the only Indigenous student in my PhD program. I met colleagues who held deep stereotypes about Native peoples, and at the same time it was a moment of resurgence of "tribal trends" in fashion. I realized that those stereotypical images were the only representations of Native peoples that folks saw, and I decided that was a problem. So I started my blog, Native Appropriations (nativeappropriations.com), as a place to catalog and explore issues of Native cultural appropriation in pop culture. today there are nearly 400 posts, breaking down everything from Indian mascots to baby tipis mixed with stories of what it means to be a contemporary Native woman. Along the way I've learned so much. In my other life I'm also an Assistant Professor of American Studies and Ethnic Studies at @BrownU, where I study with Indigenous students navigating higher education, partnering with my favorite college success organization in the world, @CollegeHorizons (I'm an alumna of CH!) for my research. In 2019 I teamed up with @matikawilbur to co-host @amrpodcast, and this week on Design Sponge we'll be sharing stories of amazing Native artists through the pod.
