Most ﬁshing gear contains plastics, especially nets, and In locations worldwide, this equipment is frequently lost for a variety of reasons. Sometimes it washes ashore, but often it doesn’t and just drifts around the ocean. Even when this debris does wash up on land, it can easily end up back in the sea if not removed. Plastic debris like this is a serious threat to marine wildlife, commonly entangling animals, which can be fatal. When I began exploring the oceans decades ago, I rarely saw plastic in the sea, but today I see it on nearly every dive that I make.
