I anticipated my birth to be like 99% of normal Icelandic births, but it didn’t turn out that way. I am not going to go into details but this is the single hardest thing I have ever had to do. My pregnancy was incredible. I was able to train and be active throughout and my body and mind felt so good. Saturday the 8th of August, 3 days past my due date, I woke up early in the morning with very painful contractions. At 10pm that evening I got admitted to the hospital because my water had broken early that same day so my babies health had to be monitored. I got pain medication to try to sleep and because of covid-19, I had to be by myself since Frederik was not allowed with me until further into labor. 3pm the following day Frederik could finally join me. We found out that her head was not in a good position for pushing - star gazer so face up and tilted which means she needs a lot more space to get out. We hoped she would turn by herself and the staff had a few tries to turn her - without success. We ended up in the surgical room for vacuum - ready for emergency c section. With over 10 people in the room, 4 of them holding me in place while pushing, suction on her head we got started. It took 5 attempts to get her moving and with the hardest push I have done in my life, we got her out. On Monday at 1216pm, I don’t know how many hours in labor, my baby girl came into the world with, soundless, and these were a few of the longest minutes of my life. Then finally a super strong cry and 100% healthy ❤️ 3904g - 54cm long ! With her first breath, this girl became the most important thing in my world ❤️ I am SO grateful for the midwifes that tended to me at the hospital and the doctors monitoring and assisting bringing my diamond safely into this world. I ended up loosing more than 2 L of blood and have a long recovery ahead of me. I may not be myself today and it may take some time. I need help doing the simplest tasks, but I will recover.
