‘I have this really nice studio out in the country. I go in there and I have my coffee. I sit and look at all the works in the studio. It's a fairly small room, very intimate. And I meditate for a while, trying to think about nothing. And then look at the works and they speak to each other. It’s almost like a narrative. Usually it inspires me to think about new ideas,’ explains artist @MaryHeilmann of her creative process.
One of the leading abstract artists of her generation, Heilmann is heavily influenced by 1960s counterculture, the surf ethos of her native California and the free speech movement, effortlessly moving between ceramics, furniture and paintings.
