Around 1946, Calder was asked to create a large work that would eventually be located in Frank Lloyd Wright's iconic Guggenheim Museum in New York.⠀ .⠀ When asked if it could be made out of gold, he replied: "OK — and we'll paint it black." While this commission never came to be, the artist later made 'The Spiral' with its alternative title '(No! to Frank Lloyd Wright)' as a sardonic reference to this earlier episode.⠀ .⠀ The kinetic potential of art was of primary interest to Calder throughout his career. Beginning in 1926 with his famous 'Cirque Calder', he was as fascinated with movement as he was with color and form. 'Why must art be static?' he once said. 'You look at an abstraction, sculptured or painted, an intensely exciting arrangement of planes, spheres, nuclei, entirely without meaning. It would be perfect, but it is always still.
