That was one of the very first steps I took to embrace who I am and where I come from. As with many cultures, in Chinese culture, a person’s name is very symbolic and parents go through much deliberation with selecting a name for their newborn. My first name 鳳敏 translates to “Sensitive Phoenix” - Fong (or “Feng” if correctly spelled in Chinese Pin Yin, my mother misspelled on my birth certificate LOL but I actually love this spelling) means Phoenix and Min means sensitive. Since learning of my name’s meaning, I felt as if this name was truly meant to be and meant for me. The Phoenix symbol has always been very special to me since I was young. Because it represents transformation, death and rebirth. A reoccurring theme in my life. Not to mention my sensitivity as a person.
