While a student @newschoolperformingarts #newschoolfordrama, I’d  begun to notice the lack of opportunities for black playwrights. It was similar to what I had experienced at Indiana University and I was surprised that a place as metropolitan and “diverse“ as New York City would struggle to represent black playwrights and black voices the same way my predominantly white university had.  •  I was very intrigued by the idea of a home for a black play rights just as @cavecanem, was a home for black poets.  I had a history with poetry spaces and Black Curtain had also supported poetry open mics on campus, so the model of a poetry open mic was on my mind.  •  Blackboard‘s first reading was in September 2008. We did a reading of my play, “Stranger in my Body”. Blackboard found a home for 10 years @thecelltheatre.  The sale was a white box performance space or salon. It was a unique space for incubating the artists that came through its doors, including myself and Blackboard, who’s name is derived from the black chalkboard wall @ the cell.  Since 2008 @Blackboardplays has given feature readings and community nights.  •  Community nights are similar to poetry open mic nights we are each playwright can bring up to 10 pages of work and have a cold read by actors! It is a fun and sometimes nerve racking evening but the point is to serve the playwright and in hearing their new work at whatever stage it is in.  •  Community nights are magic. Blackboard has remained a space for Playwrights are every stage of their career. The point is to support the work with a reading.  The point is to give the playwright a chance to hear feedback. A 20 minute talk back follows each feature reading.  I am so proud of the work that has come out of Blackboard.
