When you’re dealing with a bad or traumatic life event—e.g., job loss, a major breakup, being diagnosed with a serious illness, family estrangement, or the death of a loved one—things are going to feel pretty awful. And one of the most difficult (but under-discussed) aspects of this is the part where you have to tell other people about what’s been going on.
While it’s worthwhile to be honest about the fact that you're dealing with some shit, there are a lot of reasons why sharing personal bad news is particularly exhausting. We suggest delegating the task to a loved one.
Managing other people's reactions to your trauma is exhausting; enlisting someone else to update folks your behalf is a small act of self-care, and an easy way to take people up on their “let me know if you need anything” offers.
