Their heads are rounder and more narrow, and their eyes are less bulging. You might even notice that a pygmy hippo’s eyes are situated more on the side of their head. That’s because these smaller water potatoes spend more time on land than their river cousins. Pygmy units are endangered and found mainly in Liberia. 2nd 🦛: River units (aka river hippos, aka 𝘏𝘪𝘱𝘱𝘰𝘱𝘰𝘵𝘢𝘮𝘶𝘴 𝘢𝘮𝘱𝘩𝘪𝘣𝘪𝘶𝘴) are found in sub-Saharan Africa. They're MUCH bigger than their pygmy counterparts. Males average 3,252 lb (1,475 kg) and females tip the scale around 3,000 lb (1,360 kg), which is roughly 6x heavier than those tiny water tots. River units are gregarious and often found in large bloats up to 50 strong (although the typical pod size is 10-15). River potatoes like Amahle, Funani and Papa Otis spend almost all of their time wallowing in shallow water... just look at their face features! Their eyes are slightly periscoped and aligned on top of their head along with their ears and nostrils, the perfect placement for submersion. #HipHopAnonymous #SanDiegoZoo #Hippos #AnimalFacts #RiverUnits #PygmyPotatoes」7月29日 9時13分 - sandiegozoo
