High jewellery is one of those things that I only have a vague grasp of, with just the enthusiasm of aesthetic appreciation but sadly none of the actual know-how - In partnership with @ChristiesInc @ChristiesJewels who are currently holding their luxury sales in New York and London, I got to take a closer look at their Magnificent Jewels sale, which is currently online to bid on, with the live auction (with Covid-19 measures) taking place in New York tomorrow. It’s a mixture of signed jewels from all the biggest houses - Tiffany, Van Cleef, Cartier - as well as an array of top quality diamonds and coloured gemstones and exquisite unsigned jewellery - Over Zoom (excuse my gawping-at-screen expression), Christie’s New York jewellery specialist Lexy Damianos showed me a selection of pieces from the sale, that span 130 years, with estimate prices varying just as wildly. The pieces here aren’t by any means the ones with the highest estimate in the sale, but are distinctive for other reasons - A pair of diamond earrings made from what originally might have been a single antique brooch. Pieces that have contemporary value in their material and colour mixes like a tactile Taffin sponge coral necklace. A “fancy bluish green” diamond ring, just because I wanted to know what made it fancy (naturally occurring green diamonds are exceedingly rare apparently). Or this Cartier knuckleduster of a ring that narrates the changing scale of jewellery from delicate pieces pre-WW2 to more solid pieces that moved with the times. - I also found the way jewellery comes into vogue interesting.
