While I think the sentiment behind yesterday’s viral trend was lovely and I’m all for female empowerment, it is nowhere near as powerful and important as what is happening in Turkey. Unbeknownst to me the purpose of this black and white photo challenge was originally meant to bring awareness to the injustices happening against women in Turkey everyday. Due to the countless acts of violence that result in black and white photos of murdered women in the newspaper, this photo challenge was meant to call attention to the overwhelming number of femicides that happen every year. One unintended consequence of this viral trend going rogue is that now people (myself included) are learning more, listening, and correcting their posts. When we learn more, we share more and share better. Thank you @auturkishculturalclub for all of your amazing resources and information. It’s wonderful that so many of us were asked by our dear friends to share images in an attempt to to celebrate our strength as women, but it is way more important to amplify the origin of this message! #challengeaccepted Thank you at @grazielagems @niavardalos and @rachelzoe for nominating me.
