Make it last. Buy less. I want my message to be clear: buy less stuff. Green capitalism is a no-no. Green capitalism is by greener things, but not reducing your shopping habit. Every purchase you make costs you and the earth. The most sustainable option is always what you already have. Choose well. It’s my pleasure to support companies that value people over profit. I try to buy from small, ethical, black owned, or sustainable businesses. I want items that are used until they fall apart. Make it last. Take care of what you own. Mend items, repurpose things, get creative. Always make the most of what you’ve got! Seven years ago today, 1134 people were killed, and 2500 more injured when a major clothing factory in Bangladesh collapsed. This tragedy occurred long after workers expressed their concerns about cracks in the walls. Fashion ranks second for industries benefiting from modern slave labor. Globally, there are over 40 million people making our clothes who are victims of human trafficking, debt bondage, and forced labor. While not all of our clothes are made through slave labor, the vast majority are made in deadly unjust working conditions. It is appalling that slavery exists today. And it’s unfathomable that my shopping spree‘s have enabled it. So what can you do? Minimize your purchases, thrift, and shop secondhand. Demand ethical practices from companies.
