A horse-drawn wagon carrying the flag-draped casket of Rep. John Lewis, the civil rights icon and longtime Georgia Congressman who died at 80 on July 17, pauses after crossing the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Ala., on July 26. In March 1965, Lewis and others were beaten there by law enforcement officers while on the front lines of the 50-mile march from Selma to Montgomery to push for voting rights. (Despite his injuries, Lewis joined other activists who resumed the march two weeks later.) For years, he, accompanied politicians from both sides of the aisle to Selma to ensure the power of "Bloody Sunday" would remain in the public’s memory. Amid a series of tributes this week, Lewis will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol. Photograph by @danandersonpics@epaphotos-EFE/@shutterstock
