From Max Ernst's celebrated Shell Flowers series, this depiction of an octopus, offered for private sale, was executed during a particular period of innovation for the artist in the mid 1930s.⠀

The unusual organic forms in this work seem to populate and float over a strange perspectival geometric landscape which echo the bizarre alien landscapes with high horizon lines that fellow Surrealists Yves Tanguy and Salvador Dalí had begun painting in the late 1920s and early 1930s.⠀
