Two weeks until Purple Noon is out in the world so it seemed appropriate to share a snippet of another song. The PN songs I’ve released so far have all been fairly uplifting, but this song “Haunt” is one of the darker moments of the album and is by far the emotional climax. It’s about being haunted by bad memories that one can never quite hide away and escape from. I thought this driftwood beach served as an appropriate metaphor for the types of emotional scars described in the song. The jagged, irregular shapes remind me of emotional trauma come to life in the way they protrude out of the smooth, placid beach (and likewise our smooth, placid psyches). The atmosphere was like walking through some sort of strange contemporary art sculpture.

This clip was shot in Florida in March a couple of days after the entire state park system had been closed because of the pandemic. I hiked about a mile in the dark to make it at sunrise and was the only person in this massive nature preserve when the sun started coming up. There was a thick fog that morning that only added to the eerie ambience and I remember the entire experience feeling like a surreal dream.
