Anthony Minghella’s 1999 version of the Ripley story is my personal favorite - but both versions present an idyllic, sun-drenched version of coastal Italy in the late 1950’s.  I’ve always been less interested in the thriller-style narrative structure, and more into the look and feel of the “luxurious sensuality” (as the Criterion Collection film series describes it). It’s easy to fantasize about living the life of a millionaire playboy without a care in the world (especially during our worldwide pandemic).  An interesting side-note is that the phrase “Purple Noon” was taken from a classic Romantic poem by Percy Bysshe Shelley called “Stanza Written in Dejection, near Naples”. The poem actually falls more in-line with the emotional, melancholic themes found in my album and it was only after making the connection that I officially settled on the title.  The poem’s narrater describes being surrounded by the natural beauty of Italy - but ultimately still feeling dejected and depressed - that the landscape is of little help in easing his mind.  I think my version of PN is quite similar.  Under the layers of glossy textures, there is still a core sadness shaped by heartbreak and uncertainty.  The first slide is a vintage PN film poster.
