Photos by @CarltonWard Just before COVID-19 lockdown this spring, I was able to do one of my favorite things: camp on an island in Florida’s Ten Thousand Islands. Accessible by boat from Everglades City, this watery wilderness gives me the feeling of immersion in nature I am often craving from Florida’s more crowded coastlines. Thankfully, Everglades National Park and a network of federal and state preserves protect four million acres of contiguous public land in South Florida. That makes the Ten Thousand Islands wonderfully isolated, which is apparent by the bright stars seldom visible from more developed beaches.
