One orca drew close to the herring and spurred the rising column of fish into a panic. Another dove to the left, drawing the column higher still, and a third loomed beneath. They worked swiftly and chatted to one another in their special dialect, anticipating the movements of their prey and reacting accordingly. I kept a careful distance, with my camera held steady as I treaded water and watched in amazement. Orcas possess a formidable intelligence and work seamlessly as one unit to corner the fish against the surface, where their family members can feast. I was thrilled to witness this event and capture the moment on camera.
