Photo by @DaisyGilardini One of the great privileges of traveling in Antarctica on small ships is the flexibility to plan our excursions depending on the light. As we know, light is everything in photography. A seemingly dull landscape can transform into a stunning image in the right light!
During my last expedition we decided to try a late landing at Georges Point on Rongé Island, even though the cloud cover didn’t look favorable for a sunset. I always say to my students that the first rule in photography is to be there, and so we went.
Around 10:30 p.m., with the wind picking up and a sudden chill in my bones, I was about to give up. When I was packing up my gear, I took a last look behind me. I saw an opening in the thick clouds and decided to stay another 15 minutes—just enough time for the magic to happen!
