Rep. John Lewis was a gift to us all. He was born into segregation. He was beaten dozens of times throughout the civil rights movement and nearly beaten to death after marching peacefully across the Edmund Pettus bridge in Selma, Alabama. He endured trials and challenges I can’t begin to imagine. Still, he preached love, non-violence and forgiveness. Still, he served his country in congress for 17 terms. He preached empathy and showed solidarity with other oppressed groups. He was 80 and battling cancer and still he stood tall over the words “Black Lives Matter.” If we all manage to stir up just a fraction of his “good trouble” we might one day witness the true equality he spent his life fighting for.
RIP #johnlewis.
