Photo by @amandamustard | On the island of Ko Samui in Thailand, water buffalo graze under the island's famous palm trees. A strong cultural symbol in Thailand, water buffalo quite literally used to carry the weight of the country's farming industry. Their flat hooves could navigate the thick mud of rice fields and their robust bodies hauled carts and plowed the fields. While some farmers still use them for agricultural work, they have mostly been replaced by tractors. These days, "kwai" are kept mostly as pets, used for meat and milk, or used in traditional Thai buffalo fighting.
