My name is Paola Mathe (@findingpaola), I'm the founder and creative director of @fanmdjanm, and I'll be taking over Brooklyn's page today as part of the #sharethemicatx series! Many thanks to @austinwoman for connecting us and of course, Brooklyn for sharing her platform with me. I consider myself an all around storyteller. I love to play with color through my personal style, experiences I design, photography, and the way I live. I believe there is beauty everywhere, you just have to be open to see it. I was born and raised in a small colorful town in Haiti and moved to the US when I was twelve (almost thirteen). Our family moved from a two story house with a big yard with coconut and almond trees and chickens to a one bedroom apartment in Newark, NJ. My first introduction to America was not at all what I envisioned. We moved into a neighborhood with identical brick, soulless buildings, where cop cars sat at almost every corner, where children my age were viewed as adults, and where we had to all go through metal detectors to enter our school. Despite many odds, I went and graduated from Drew University. I was the first in my family to graduate from college. I met my husband and partner of fifteen years at the university. While he went off to grad school, I moved to NYC with a few hundred bucks and a determination to find myself and make my dreams come true. I lived in Harlem for nine years before I followed my husband to Austin, TX almost three years ago, where we live with our two year old daughter and many plant babies. I've experienced a lot of prejudice and racism in this country. I'm not here to teach you how to be an ally. I trust that you've already embarked on this journey yourselves, just like I, a black woman, have had to learn how to navigate the world around me, setting my foot in rooms that were not designed for me. I'm here to share my story, my work, and why celebrating black women is so important to me. I'm also here to encourage you to no only diversify your feeds, but also your lives. To learn your own history, and to do what's right even when it puts your privileges at stake.」6月24日 22時27分 - brooklyndecker
