A couple of things I’m revisiting, some I’m just starting if you’re looking for material. People’s History isn’t written by a Black author, BUT it opens with Columbus’s discovery of our nation- a “discovery” that was brutally violent, oppressive and genocidal. I don’t know how I’ll teach my kids the truth of our origin story, but I’m convinced that if we taught them the brutal truth- that our country was intentionally built to be inequitable (not that it started with all of us holding hands around a dinner table) maybe we would stop trying to “make America great again” and instead, adopt the mentality that we’ve never really had it figured out and it’s on US to right these wrongs. Anyway, as I’m newly on this path myself, I figured I’d share and I’d love your suggestions too.
