I was overwhelmed with gratitude that he is still in my house, and anger that this isn’t true for so many other families. I’m angry that other mothers with 4 year olds like mine, 4 year olds that are not white, have to start the process of teaching their *toddlers* not to hide their hands in their pockets, or wear a hoodie, or break eye contact, or RUN, because if they do, it could get them killed. My privilege has protected me from having to have those conversations with my child, but he’ll know this all soon. But what the hell is privilege for if it’s not used to fight for the oppressed? So I’m here to say I’m an ally. I’m reading the books, I’m having the internal conversations, I’m listening, I’m working. I’ve seen posts telling us not to share books, not to share our stories, not to stay quiet, not to ask our black friends what to do and I understand all of that, it’s not the responsibility of anyone else to educate me, to fix me. SO, I will say it again, I am an ally. I’m not asking you to tell me how to be better but know that I’m here to BE better (if you WANT to tell me, I’m more than happy to listen). I have been hesitant about posting the wrong thing or adding to the hurt, but staying silent felt even more destructive. White friends, let’s do the damn work to be better.
