Their fingerless hands cover the areas on their faces where eyes or ears would exist in a manner similar to the three wise monkeys who 'see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil.'⠀ .⠀ The phrase 'Silence = Death' combined with the pink triangle became a gay pride symbol that was increasingly adopted in the 1970s.
