This weekend Ejaz Choudry was shot and killed by police.
He was a 62-year-old man, a father of four with schizophrenia. The family called a non emergency line hoping he would be taken to hospital and helped through a mental-health crisis. Ejaz was armed with a knife and alone in the apartment. The family pleaded to talk to him alongside police and were told no.
Hassan Choudhary, one of Mr. Choudry’s nephews spoke at a news conference yesterday. “He wasn’t a danger to anyone else. He was by himself in his home where he felt safe, He can’t think straight, he’s schizophrenic, and [police] are going and killing him because he’s going to kill himself? Where’s the logic in that?” This is why we say defund the police. Allocate money into social programs where mental professionals can handle mental crisis calls. This is why we need the police who work for us to have more than a few weeks of training. This is all we are talking about. ❤️ #ejazchoudry
