Paul Fortune, the English designer who pioneered the Los Angeles eclectic style, has died at the age of 69. In the world of interiors, Fortune was, as ED’s @ingridabram describes him, “a cult figure, if not quite a household name.” Having designed homes for Marc Jacobs, Aileen Getty, Sofia Coppola, and more, Fortune created rooms filled with dark wood and vintage furnishings, upholstered in leather or subdued stripes, and dimly lit (“Spotlights are the devil’s work,” he would say). Pictured here is a quintessential Paul Fortune mix—with artwork by Holly Montgomery, a sofa from Munder-Skiles, and a side table by Nicholas Mongiardo—in a bedroom sitting area in the Berkshires. His spotlight-averse design style also carried into his personal life: “He tried to disappear, but that only made him more in demand,” says his friend, the designer @davidnettosays. “The more he tried to make himself obscure, the more people were beating a path to his door.” Read more on Fortune’s enduring legacy at the link in our bio.
