To everyone out there using their platforms, remember how important it is to continue to educate ourselves beyond this week. The protests will end but our promise to fight cannot be temporary. This is more than a movement, this is quite possibly the most important moment of our lifetime because we have the ability to learn, unite, and fight for change, for justice, for equality + for peace. But first we need to understand, we need to REALLY understand how we got here in the first place. We need to know history, policies and how the economic model that fuels this country was built. We can’t just skim through the cliff notes version. We can’t just regurgitate the bullet points. Literally and metaphorically, we need to read the whole book and then go back to the library for more. A couple of thoughts here in case it inspires more action: Parents, don’t forget to bring up anti-racism and black history with your kid’s teachers. My daughter is only in pre-school but I have organized a meeting about how we can ensure schools are taking this seriously and incorporating honest storytelling, black history and anti racism into their schools. I understand the controversy in bringing in violence and such uncomfortable topics into the minds of such little people, but please consider the importance of this and find a way in. Reading: The Color of Law, White Fragility, Between the World and Me and more coming. LISTENING: And keep listening. Business owners, lets make sure the structure of our companies matches the intentions we all speak of. Hold ourselves accountable. Create actionable items and make sure we do them. For me that also includes researching and highlighting the intersectionality between environmentalism and social consciousnesses. Googling prison reform and learning about corporations that directly benefit from keeping people incarcerated. Figuring out what brands you support that capitalize on cheap prison labor.
