Today, Maya Penn is a 20 year old award-winning environmental activist, a 3 time TED Speaker on sustainability and climate change, an artist, animator, designer, filmmaker, sustainability consultant and author. She has been working in sustainability and environmental justice for 12 years and has received a commendation from President Barack Obama for outstanding achievement in environmental stewardship. Maya has been featured in countless magazines for her incredible work in this space, and I know I speak for so many when I say she is the real deal. Maya has inspired me since day I met her. Through her nonprofit Maya's Ideas 4 The Planet, she designed, created and shipped eco-friendly sanitary pads to women and girls in healthcare facilities in Haiti, Senegal, Somalia, and Cameroon. Maya’s book You Got This which I was honored to write a blurb for back in 2016 is being used in schools around the world as curriculum to teach youth sustainable entrepreneurship, creative problem solving, and giving back. I am not surprised, because Maya has always been a leader and educator in this space. I am excited to share that we are in the early stages of finding a way for Maya to consult for Bayou With Love on Intersectional Environmentalism, because her knowledge and passion are unparalleled and we are beyond thrilled to learn from Maya. As we get older, its interesting to notice our roles are now reversed- I was once her mentor and now she is mine.
