After many weeks of feeding almost non-stop on the leaves of trees and shrubs, this cecropia caterpillar will begin its transformation, soon emerging from its cocoon as the largest moth in North America. Found east of the Rocky Mountains in the United States and Canada, these beauties have an impressive wingspan of five to six inches. Unlike the hungry caterpillars, the cecropia moth does not feed - its sole purpose is to mate. After just a few weeks, the moth will die, and the cycle begins again with a new clutch of freshly laid eggs.
