We often don’t get down there until about 10pm, more than enough time for Bertie to be out and about on his evening wanderings, often stopping to slake his thirst in the water bowl that we put down for him nightly. Now more than a year old he still has the same distinctive, uniquely comedic characteristics. He still scuttles in the same ridiculous fashion, still stops and looks startled like no other badger, still blunders through the wood with all of the grace and poise of a bull trying to tiptoe out of a china shop! He was, and is, one of a kind and the privilege of the time that we were able to spend with him last Spring, at his most vulnerable time, will live long in our memory. These long dry days however present innumerable challenges for badgers, the difficulty of finding enough food forces many into starvation as their preferred food items disappear deep underground. I make no bones about the fact that I assist Bertie and his family during these challenging times and I am happy to admit that I will rarely, if ever, ‘let nature take its course’. Where I can I will help, where I can save a life I will, where I can make a difference it is to me a no-brainer. A great many of the challenges that our animal cousins face are either human made, or at least exacerbated by our rapacious activity and so, to blithely sit back and witness suffering, all under some phoney, self-aggrandising notion of the importance of not getting involved, this is not my way, this is not my character. Had Claire and I not stepped in, had we not fed and watered this little soul when he needed help the most, then he would simply not be here. This precious life would no longer exist, and all the lives that will spring forth from the’Bertster in his years ahead would also have been lost. For what exactly? I know for certain that the world is richer for having him in it and you can be damn sure that whenever and if ever he needs a little help from us in future, then we will absolutely be there for him.」6月11日 3時33分 - thephotosociety
