Most recently in 2018, I birthed the @badguild to create a safe space for Black artists, makers and designers to thrive. WE are exhausted and no longer want to share our struggle to fill the pages of your magazine or take up space online. And the lists ain’t cutting it either. STOP asking Black designers to answer questions about our experience, we’ve been TOLD you. STOP Asking Black designers to sit on panels (for free) discussing “Diversity” that’s not OUR problem. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ START with a public statement apologizing how you’ve failed to create space, opportunities and have not INVESTED in Black talent, design or culture. And cultural appropriation doesn’t count! ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ START looking at how you hold yourself to be the gatekeeper who amplifies and awards good design. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ START reviewing the funnels that lead designers to be invited guests to private events, collaborations with decision makers. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ There are many more areas to address, to start your process.
