The phrase “performance allyship” has been laid on the doorstep of the fashion industry. Brands that post hollow sounding statements when their track record with even the most basic tenets of diversity has been non existent. And suddenly stories from behind the scenes at magazines and media companies are emerging of at best dismissive, at worse discriminatory behaviour in the US
-
Jeanie @jeanieus and I are speaking from a mainly UK/London perspective where we ostensibly have an industry that fosters camaraderie, grassroots creativity and progressive ideas. But it’s precisely this liberal bubble that hides some of the more latent acts of systemic racism and instances of bias within the industry. Jeanie has tried for years to make sense of a system where peers of similar experience have advanced ahead of her and where her eye/taste has been appropriated by other people
-
It saddens me that it has also come to the point where she has grown weary of explaining why she has been routinely passed over. Cowered, even. She talks about her appearance also being a factor in how people shape their opinion of her, a point raised in @lpeopleswagner ‘s brilliant article “What it’s really like to be black and work in fashion” on @thecut (a really comprehensive summary of the industry’s state of play, albeit US-centric)
-
This is about Jeanie, and scoreless others who have had similar experiences and have maybe thought about quitting because as she puts it, she is simply tired of fighting a fight that simply isn’t fair from the outset. It's time to change that

“The industry has been papering over the cracks, letting a few black people in and then closing the doors.”
