This has been something that has been really hard for me to come to terms with and something that’s even harder for me to talk about. But it’s something I’m trying to be more open and honest about as I really think it’s helping me to understand and process how I’m feeling. About five years ago my mum was diagnosed with Frontotemporal dementia (FTD). She was 45 then and in the space of that five years she has deteriorated so fast that she now lives in a high care facility, is immobile, non verbal, can’t shower or feed herself properly and is permanently in a wheel chair. It has effected everything in my life and how I think about life and everyone in my family. It’s been so hard for us to watch, I can’t even imagine how she must feel. This is the first time I’ve ever openly spoken about it. If you’re in a similar situation, I understand, I’m sorry and I sympathise with you. And for everyone else, please don’t ever take your health and family for granted. Go and hug your mum, your family and friends and tell them you love them! Because in the end what else matters?
