I started my career directing music videos for #DefJam and all I wanted was to direct videos for #UptownRecords Uptown had Mary J., Jodeci, Heavy D, Puff, Al B.Sure and every great R & B artist I wanted to work with. Andre was tired of hearing Russell tell him how talented I was and knowing my goal of wanting to do bigger budget videos invited me into his office one day and sat me down for some schoolin. He said if I ever wanted to direct big black artists I needed to understand Black Culture! He gave me a lesson that broke down every type of Black man there was and used the 5 Burroughs of MANHATTAN as a metaphor by describing how a black man from the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and Staten Island would dress. When I walked out of that room I could tell you where any African American man was from just from his shoes or his hair style. He then sent me into the conference room where his whole staff was waiting for me including Puffy who was A and R at that time, Sybil the in-house Stylist and Jimmy Love who was wearing a Koufi! It was the scariest room I had ever been in and I had to stand in the middle of all these non smiling black record executives to convince them that I was the right director to direct Heavy D’s new video. Heavy was the crown jewel of Uptown and they weren’t going to just hire any white boy because he was friends with RUSSELL. I walked out of the room with the job because Andre prepped me. I understood who Heavy was not only musically but culturally. Andre was a cultural intellectual and would explain the subtleties of everything we were talking about from music, movies, art, to anything concerning pop culture! Andre truly loved life and the people that were a part of his life! He was always fair non judgmental and wasn’t afraid to tell you the truth! When you did well he was happy for you! He wanted you to win. He was a great father and human being that died way too young because he contributed so much to so many peoples lives. Iloveyou Dre and I won’t ever forget your generosity of spirit. My heart is with @Gianni」5月9日 16時56分 - brettrat
