Today’s environmental musing of the day: it’s hard to do the right thing!
I’ve spent something like 3 hours researching transportation emissions and formulating tons of different ideas. I’m hindered by the fact that Instagram limits post length; I could spend pages writing about the nuances of transportation and what the best courses of individual action are.
And then it occurred to me - that’s the real nugget of wisdom here: it’s too hard to do the right thing. I’m a professional athlete who climbs 20-35 hours a week. I spend the rest of the time “resting”, which means reading whatever I want. I’m basically as privileged as it gets in this world, yet despite my time and resources I’m still having a hard time figuring out exactly what I should be doing. And I’m someone who deeply cares about the environment and wants to preserve it.
It’s unrealistic for me to expect this same level of interest or effort from virtually anyone else. Most people have lives with heavier obligations and more difficult circumstances. They might care about the environment in a general sense and want their kids to grow up with clean air, but they aren’t about to spend 3 hours at the kitchen table reading about the future of electric transit, because they can’t afford to.

What we do matters, which is why I’ve given up meat and dairy and offset my travel with @mossy.earth and tried to harness my fame into something useful like the @honnoldfoundation. But it only goes so far, and we can’t really expect each individual to care that much.

But we really need to force some systemic changes as well, so that not everyone has to do a research project each time they want to do the right thing. This is why we vote…
