Photo by @amivitale | One of the last two northern white rhinos on the planet grazes with head keeper Zacharia Mutai on the wide-open savanna of @OlPejeta Conservancy in northern Kenya. Najin and Fatu are currently the last two northern white rhinos, but scientists and conservationists are working to change that. In a groundbreaking undertaking, they have created three northern white rhino embryos from oocytes (immature egg cells) harvested from Najin and Fatu and genetic material from deceased northern white rhino males. The embryos are being stored in liquid nitrogen to be transferred into a surrogate southern white rhino mother in the near future, likely sometime this year. The team is from Leibniz Institute for Zoo and Wildlife Research (@leibnizizw), Avantea, @OlPejeta Conservancy, @KenyaWildlifeService, and @SafariParkDvurKralove.
