It seems out of place to see polar bears among trees. Wapusk National Park in Manitoba, Canada, is the world’s southernmost denning area for polar bears. It’s located far below the Arctic Circle, where the boreal forest transitions to Arctic tundra. After this mama spent all day resting, nursing, and playing with her cubs in the shelter of a day den in a grove of trees, she decided it was time to continue her journey to reach the pack ice of Hudson Bay. Peering through the trees, I could clearly see two ear tags. Each tag has an individual identification number that corresponds to a lip tattoo. Information about the date and location of the initial capture, as well as the health of each bear, is listed in an electronic database. This helps scientists better understand the bears’ movements and health conditions.
