Photo by @bertiegregory | Male harp seals take turns breathing through a small opening in the sea ice in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Quebec, Canada. As far as we can tell, this is the first time such a large group—more than 50—of these seals has been photographed underwater. These males were waiting near thousands of females who would soon abandon their pups and become ready to mate. The adult males and females then headed north on their annual migration.
