Photo by Stephen Alvarez @salvarezphoto | The Great Gallery, in Utah's Horseshoe Canyon, was the first Barrier Canyon-style pictograph panel to be described by anthropologists. The style is now known to be spread across parts of Utah, western Colorado, and Arizona, but the Great Gallery remains one of the most impressive precontact murals in North America. The scale of the painting is hard to grasp. The entire composition is more than 200 feet end to end, and the largest anthropomorphic figures are larger than life size. Rock art is notoriously hard to date, but these images are thought to come from the Late Archaic period of the American Southwest. Seeing fabulous artwork like this inspired me to start the @ancientartarchive to share and preserve humanity's oldest stories.
