Here and in other protected areas on the Alaska Peninsula, humans and bears have learned to peacefully coexist, giving rise to a booming bear-viewing industry. But the bears and their habitat are threatened by the proposed Pebble Mine, which would risk poisoning the ecosystem and involve a sprawling transport corridor less than a mile from the McNeil River Refuge–exposing the same bears to road traffic, pollution, and risk of harm. If the bears learn to associate humans with food or danger, our harmonious relationships with them will be lost.
