A phase complete. I’m so incredibly thankful to my team at Providence St. John’s and The Angeles Clinic - Dr. Grumley, Dr. Chung and Dr. Chaiken for their dedication, grace, and patience; the tireless work, upbeat attitudes and compassion demonstrated by the nurses, social workers, and technicians, the incredible teamwork of my friends and family who showered me with regular check-ins, pick-ups, flower and food deliveries, and the support of all of you here on social media.

Some of you have asked for clarification around my current prognosis as my post following surgery was slightly confusing. To clarify, pathology found three isolated tumor cells still remaining in Bob. F’n Bob, hanging on by a thread. Luckily, this outcome is still considered a “complete response,” sparing me from having to do more chemo in 2020. The intent of radiation was to blast any remaining sneaky Bob cells, and I still have another 4 months of regular Herceptin/Perjeta infusions to keep the situation in check. I’m also doing a number of integrative medicine things including supplements, exercise, and a diet that does NOT include sugar. .

In three months, I’ll have another scan, but until then, my prognosis is incredibly positive! Doctors can’t declare remission until I’m two years out from surgery without reoccurrence, and “cured” is declared when you’re 10 years out without reoccurrence. HER2+ cancers have higher reoccurrence rates (between 20-30%) relative to other forms of breast cancer, but the further out from surgery without incident, the better. This all being said, I’m feeling particularly confident about my attempts to persuade the universe in my direction, and I currently have an all-caps note on my October 2021 calendar that says “REMISSION!!” .

If you’re a friend of someone going through treatment and you aren’t sure how to be most helpful, I created an Amazon wishlist of all the items I found necessary or helpful during the various phases of my treatments, link in my bio.
