Photo by @クリス・バーカード | Two completely different landscapes collide, making the Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve in Colorado. The mountains and dunes were created by the same forces of wind, with the dunes peaking at up to 750 feet (228 meters), the tallest in North America. After lakes within the valley receded, the exposed sand was blown by the predominant southwest winds toward the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, eventually forming the dune field over an estimated tens of thousands of years. Within the western U.S., the Great Sand Dunes National Park is one of my favorite places to explore.
