Photo by Cristina Mittermeier @Cristina Mittermeier | Like an undulating sandwich, these two pink whiprays, traveling together, came so close to me that I actually had to push them away gently with my camera! Whiprays off the coast of Moorea have been fed by people for decades, so they are not shy in approaching, and, despite their fearsome tail barb, they are quite gentle. Did you know that stingrays use electro-sensors to find their next meal on the ocean floor? With their eyes on the tops of their heads, they can't see underneath them to eat, so they feel for their food instead with electric currents. Charismatic and curious, the species gets its name for being tinted pink. In this image, it's easier to see the pink hue on the one closest to the sun.
