Photo by @paoloverzone | John Hodgson, joint head of special collections, stands in the old “art alcove” of the John Rylands Library at the University of Manchester in England. The Historic Reading Room is the heart of the library, traditionally where people would have studied the collections, but now given over to visitors. As the centerpiece of the library, it is filled with general books, many of them from the Spencer collection (of Diana, Princess of Wales), one of the foundation collections. Hodgson says of the library, “This is not a museum—it is a working and living library that is collecting all the time, with visiting scholars from all over the world. It is a working collection. A lot of the work happens out of sight from the general public. The collections are here to be used. What the public sees is the tip of the iceberg.” The books are intrinsic to the architecture of the building. #manchester #johnrylandslibrary
