I was signed up. Honestly, I don’t remember anything about the session except that they brought calipers and were pinching my fat and measuring. Hello love handles (if there was such a thing at the time on me), soft under arms, thighs and softer back areas. I was hyper aware of these areas from then on thanks to those coaches who told me I probably needed to work on my diet, or exercise more, so that I matched the typical athletic body type. • My mom must have noticed that I began eating less even before I realized what I was doing. I think it instilled something in me that would eventually prevent me from following ED too deeply. • But as I got older, was driving myself, had my first job, and was traveling around the world solo around 17-18 years old things changed. I felt like I had been on a plateau for quite some time and I was ready to get off. I dreamt of becoming National Champion, doing better in World Cups, and of sending harder routes outside. • I began to notice a commonality between the women who I looked up to who were crushing both the rocks and in comps; they were all very thin. I noticed my peers getting thinner and thinner and just turning climbs into dust behind them; they too were thinner than when we were younger. • So I tried it myself. I severely restricted my caloric intake and dubbed it as “getting healthy.” I nixed white sauces because a peer had done so. I eliminated eating anything after 8pm regardless of my hunger level. I had rules that even if I had spent all day training hard, I wouldn’t eat a single thing on the airplane home (I traveled a lot as I had coaches in other states so I was often gone on weekends working with them). I stopped eating things such as cookies or anything with added sugars despite cookies being my favorite. I’d eat only a cup of vegetable soup after climbing outside all day long.
