I remember coming in through San Francisco airport, and all of the anti-war people knew what the ribbons on your uniform meant. I got shouted at, called horrible names, all that. I’m glad that the country has been able to move away from that, deriding the troops. I see people continuing to join and to serve, including my own kids. I have two sons, one that served in Desert Storm, whose unit went right into the Republican Guard on the third day. My youngest son will pin on Major on December 1st, he’s an intelligence officer in SOCOM. He was in Iraq and Afghanistan, on the ground. My whole family is in service of some kind; my daughter just joined our local volunteer fire department as an EMT. My father served in World War II. My favorite landmark in DC (besides the Wall) is Arlington National Cemetery. As a military retiree with war service, I’m eligible to be buried there. It is hallowed ground. A lot of people there to show the cost of war. I hate war. You would be hard pressed to find anybody who’s ever been in war who would say they love it.
