Captured on one of those simply remarkable evenings it is near impossible for me to fully articulate what occurred that day. Having spent the previous three days on a stretch of river dominated by very large and territorial males our group, until this evening, hadn’t really had any decent opportunities with cubs. All this was to change when we arrived at Kuril Lake and at this estuary location no males were present, at least none that would entertain the idea of taking on the two big mommas who kept their precious cubs close by. This cub, and his sibling, were both incredibly active and playful and as mum fished quietly in the river these two would run and play and fight and chase. So considerate were they that they would always do this within sight of us, even more so when the evening light emerged from behind a bank of cloud. Right on cue the whole family crossed near us, over the river to where we could photograph them using backlight. In this moment this cub found what appears to be a stone and, so thrilled was he, that as he clutched it proudly in his mouth that he decided to make like a human and go for a walk. His bipedal style was clumsy at first but he stayed upright long enough that we were all able to capture versions of the moment, so here is mine. It’s rarely a problem for me that my 200-400mm lens lacks the reach of other, bigger telephotos and this is another such moment, the habitat for me as important as the bear cub himself. As I generally prefer I exposed the image so that enough light was thrown onto the cub, allowing the viewer to engage with his character, his charm and his goonishness (it’s a word!), yet another moment in nature that I will cherish always.」9月5日 10時29分 - thephotosociety
