Photos by @melissafarlow | Southeast Alaska is wild and immense, and one of my favorite assignments for @ナショナルジオグラフィック magazine focused on the Tongass National Forest. I photographed wildlife, pristine old growth forests and the people who make this region their home. After 20 years of protection the world’s largest intact temperate rainforest may be opened to logging. Alaska’s 16.7 million-acres with massive stretches of old-growth conifers with rivers teaming with salmon survived legal assaults, but our President’s new plan will remove logging and mining restrictions on 9.5 million acres. Vast forests were being clearcut and the old growth trees were processed for pulp and/or sent overseas.
