Firstly, as they grow older and bigger, the females are changing sex to male (impossible to distinguish between their apparences). As there are typically 4 females per 1 male, the presence of more rare males is crucial for breeding purposes. Harvesting them when they’re smaller than this doesn’t allow them to breed and harvesting them bigger than this would take away indispensable breeders. Secondly, the risk of ciguatera in the Caribbean’s area (especially the Bahamas) is way too high in fish past a certain weight (I wouldn’t risk eating anything above 15lbs). Spearfishing allows you to apply that kind of selection and ensure that your catch has the least possible impact on the ecosystem.
